Part-Time Building Official Job Listing

The Town of Chester is seeking applicants for a part time position as Building Official. This position (approximately 12 hours per week) administers the Town’s building inspection program and enforces all code requirements of the State of Connecticut relating to building construction. The individual who holds this position will, when necessary, coordinate with local boards and commissions, the zoning enforcement official, inland wetlands enforcement officer and health district to ensure enforcement of applicable ordinances and regulations as they may affect building and construction.  He or she will review plans, issue permits and perform on site inspections of residential and commercial construction, investigate complaints and enforce the State Building Code to ensure that a project is accomplished in compliance with applicable regulations. The Building Official will issue violation notices when appropriate, represent the municipality in court cases as required, and maintain good working relationships with the public and with contractors.  The Building Official keeps records of property actions and permits, develops budgets and oversees expenditures, and provides technical assistance to town officials and residents on all building code and construction matters.

 

Qualifications: The Building Official must be able to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications, establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, and must be able to express ideas effectively in oral or written form to associates, the general public and appointed/elected boards and commissions.  He or she must have a thorough knowledge of State building code requirements and enforcement related Statutes, regulations, and building codes, and must have a working knowledge of computers including but not limited to skills with Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.  This position requirements the Building Official possess the following:  High School Diploma – Certification as a Connecticut Building Official – 5 years of experience in construction or a combination of education and experience – knowledge of ADA laws and regulations -excellent attention to detail – a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and reliable vehicle – must be able to work indoors or outdoors in all weather and possess enough agility to negotiate a ladder, crawl space or construction site to make a proper inspection.

 

Starting pay: $35.00-$37.00/hr, depending on experience
